My Uncle Napoleon
Published in Paperback by Mage Pub (01 March, 2000)
Authors: Iraj Pezeshkzad and Dick Davis
Average review score:

A Satire about Iranian life
I watched the TV series based on this book on Iranian TV when i was 3 or 4 years old. As another reviewer mentioned, this book and the TV show are part of Iranian culture now. Iranians usually take themselves very serious, but this book dares to make fun of the Iranian life. After the revolution, it was banned by the Islamic Republic. I even heard that one of the actors who played in the movie went to jail after the revolution because of a scene when his character makes fun of Islam! Ayatollah Khomeini and his entourage, who unfortunately are still ruling in Iran, had a very limited set of mind and they didn't understand what comedy means! But people still had the show on Video tape and and watched it. It was still great. It's a true Iranian classic!

Funny and Delightful
My Uncle Napoleon is a hilarious examination of a part of Iranian society in the 1940's. The character development is the strongest aspect of the book and the situational comedy is also very good. I recently read A Confederacy of Dunces; these two novels share many qualities.

My Uncle Napoleon gives a portrayal of Iran that is very different from what is provided by the mainstream press. While the aristocratic characters belong to a place and time that is long gone, the mannerisms and character types satirized in the book are still present to some degree in many Iranians.

Read this book if you want a good laugh or a glimpse of Iranian culture you could not otherwise get.

An Iranian Classic Finally Translated Brilliantly in English
My Uncle Napoleon (aka: Daei Jon Napelon) is one of the great Iranian masterpieces. Although the story is sure to inform the non-Iranian reader about WWII era Iran, its true topic is one that anyone can relate to - true love. This book will remind you what it was like to have a crush on someone that was unavailable. Much like Charles Shulz's Charlie Brown and the "Little Red Haired Girl," our novel's protagonist has fallen madly in love with someone that is inaccessible to him. Meanwhile, interfamily politics keep rocking the young man's already unstable boat. What I like most about this book is how heart wrenching emotions and laugh out loud comedy go hand in hand, much like in real life. It is this book's realism that is its greatest asset, everything from the characters to the emotions within this book are a true reflection of real life. Dick Davis has done a magnificent job translating this novel, all of the characters' original dialogue and various ethnic colloquialisms remain intact. As a result this book is a fantastic insight into Iran for the non-Iranian reader. Not to mention that you are sure to win many Brownie points with your Iranian friends/colleagues if they find out that you have read this book. This is because My Uncle Napoleon is a part of Iranian culture that is very personal to most Iranians. It was made into a famous television miniseries in the seventies (alas it is still left untranslated) that to this day is one of the most popular shows in Iranian history. Most Iranians have a worn out set of VHS tapes somewhere in their house that attest to this. So please hesitate no more, and order this wonderful book. I'm sure that you will treasure it.

The Quilt
Published in Paperback by Monarch Books (1992)
Author: T. Davis Bunn
Average review score:

An important lesson to learn
The Quilt is the wonderful story of an old woman, Mary. She is a mother and a grandmother, and has a long and meaningful life to look back on. Now she feels all the signs of age, and her hands and fingers that used to do all kinds of useful crafts are now arthritic. Still they have their own, very special beauty, like Mary has in herself. People can see the beauty in this old woman, and not only family, but people of all ages comes to see her. And Mary has the skill to see the beauty in them all.

Mary looks at her fingers, and can still see that God has something useful waiting for them. She knows that there is still something life wants her to do. She then starts to make the QUILT together with all the people coming to see her. But this is not an ordinary quilt. Every singel stich is made with a prayer. And as the stiching goes on, the life of the people we meet starts to change.

This is a moving book, written in a beautiful way. The book teach us something important of life. In a time when we are all so busy, we never have time to sit down together, not to mention sit down in silence and in prayer. No one who gets involved with Mary's quilting project will be the same again. No one who gets involved in this book will be the same again. Weather you are a quilter or not, we all can do something with life, for ourselves and for others.

Britt Arnhild Lindland

Beauty from the Fabrics of our Lives
One does not have to be a quilter to appreciate the warmth and gentle peace which emanate from this gem of a little book. Aged and infirm, Mary is admired by most people in her community, for she has a special way of making each one feel at home and of value; she gently helps them find solutions to their problems and solace for their cares--a rare gift in itself. Because she leads others to calm introspection, she is considered by all a truly beautiful woman. Her two sons are so different, but one of them underdstands her need to complete something beautiful--to create with more than mere fingers.

Mary has a dream to create a patchwork quilt from cherished scraps (a diary of the fabrics in her life). Her goal catches the imagination of her daughters-in-law, as well as other kind ladies in her town. Precious memories are shared as comunal stitching brings these women together in a way they did not realize possible. Soon it becomes imperative to complete the Quilt before Mary--with her arthritic hands--is called Home. She loved both her sons to the end, but only one understood her great need to preserve the sacred family memories. This book will touch your heart and possibly inspire you to start saving the special fabric scraps of your own life. Most importantly, to cherish your family and leave them a memorable, tangible gift of your love.

A prayer - a stitch
When I was knitting a blanket for a friend's very premature and very at-risk son I put it aside because I was afraid that I would be "jinxing" them. And then I read this book - and realized that every stitch could be a prayer for Matthew. He's 5 now, with some problems, but he loves and is loved. And his blanket has warmed his siblings as well.

Sensational Dried Flowers: Make Arrangements So Beautiful They Look Fresh
Published in Hardcover by Rodale Press (April, 1999)

Sensational Dried Flowers : Make Arrangements So Beautiful
This is a new hobby for me and I found the Book beautifully illustrated and easy to understand. The author covers a variety of subjects related to drying flowers such as tips on how to display the attractively and creatively after drying. She also has some chapters on how containers, from old boxes to odd-shaped baskets can serve as a base for your dried floral arrangement. She also included many names of flowers that can be successfully dried as well as a suggested timetable since flowers have different moisture content. One problem I had was finding Silica Jel in large quantities locally. If would have been helpful to have this info included in book. I did find a source in California however.

A SUPER GIFT!
(This is an adult review! Couldn't find where to write it except here!)

It's always a challenge to find the perfect birthday present for my artist/gardening wife. This year I found a winner in "Sensational Dried Flowers" by Esther Davis.

My wife was always disappointed when she tried to dry flowers in the traditional manner. They ended up with faded colors and shriveled blossoms.

It was hard to believe that the beautiful flowers pictured in the book were actually dried and not fresh from a florist or the garden. But with the help of the simple but thorough directions in Ms. Davis's book, we were thrilled when our first attempt with a Zinnia looked like it had indeed come fresh from the garden!

The arrangements by Ms. Davis are beautifully done, and have given us many great ideas. We highly recommend "Sensational Dried Flowers" whether you are an artist, a gardener, or just want to create some beauty you can be proud of in your own home or as gifts for friends.

(I am 71 years old (going on 52) if it really matters.

Dried flowers for the non-craft person
I am not your typical crafty husband. I can easily pass by the craft section of the store without feelings of remorse. However, while waiting for my wife, I picked up this book and started looking through it. It only took a few moments of looking at the tools of the trade page to get me interested. Pliers, clother pins, and glue guns...I could really get interested in something that started off with these items. I purchased the book and asked my wife where we could buy Silica gel at 9:30 in the evening. I found the examples and pictorial instructions most helpful and my results actually looked like the pictures. I can not claim to have produced the arrangements as glorious as those pictured in Ms. Davis' book, but I was very proud of them and found them to last much longer than expected. I would recommend this book to the expert and the novice. It has something for each category. I even went to meet Ms. Davis at a book signing. Her techniques in flower drying are most remarkable.

Sex Education - a Novel
Published in Paperback by The Watts Publishing Group (30 March, 1989)
Author: Jenny Davis
Average review score:

Beautifully depressing.
I just happened to be browsing through my high school library, and picked out this book because of the tital. It turns out that this book doesn't really have all that much do with sex, but it was a splendid read. I loved this book, I read the whole thing in one sitting because its just one of those books you can't put down. Although I was pretty depressed after finishing it, its still worth it. You can learn a lot of valuable lessons from reading Sex Education, I highly recommend it.

A superb account of a teen's asssignment: to care
Livvie is the new girl in town when she meets David in her biology class. The topic of the semester is sex education: a concerned teacher's campaign to prevent teen pregnancy, and to help young people make more informed and hopefully safer choices. Through a variety of assignments, she teaches her students not only the facts and statistics about disease and pregnancy prevention, but also how to care for someone in a non-sexual way, and how to express themselves. The teacher's realistic message is "wait as long as you can." The main project of the semester is "to care about another person." David and Livvie choose to work together, befriending Livvie's new neighbor, a frail and timid pregnant woman who seems to desperately need someone to care about her The best part about this book is Davis' sensitive writing. We experience everything through Livvie's naive eyes, especially the growing affection between her and David and the joys of first love. By contrast, the problems in the marriage of the new neighbors reveal themselves bit by bit. The horrifying climax reveals the reason Livvie pens her story from an insane asylum. Readers will feel her shock, grief and anger. The deep empathy with Livvie shows strong characterization, and the plot is much more complex than one would guess from the title. This is a book that made me smile with fond memories of my own first love, and weep for the characters. Sex Education is a must have for any young adult library.

A Coming of Age Story That Rivals "Catcher In The Rye"
Davis's prose is lyrical and delicate, but her real triumph is in creating characters that seem at once real and heroic. Although ostensibly a "Young Adult" novel (My daughter recommended it to me)I found myself moved to the point of tears. A must-read.

Women, Race and Class
Published in Hardcover by Random House (January, 1982)
Author: Angela Yvonne Davis
Average review score:

A fascinating look at the women's movement
This book, or at least excerpts from it, should be a must read for everyone. Davis presents a side of the suffragette movement, the first wave of feminism, that many people will never be aware of--the conflict between women's rights and African American rights, and the underlying racism of the movement spearheaded by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Davis then effectively juxtaposes the first wave of feminism with the second wave of feminism in the 1960-70's to show the correlation between the two movements.

In both cases, the fight for African American rights took prescedence over the rights of women. While during the first wave of feminism, black women were ignored by the suffragettes, during the second wave of feminism, black women were faced with the choice of going forward in a women's movement that, once again, didn't really include them, or supporting the rights of African Americans as a race. A difficult choice. Davis clearly elucidates the failings of the both waves of feminism to include ALL women and shows how necessary it is for women, regardless of race, to work together.

Feminist Movement
If you are concerned about thedirection of the feminist movementin this country then, by all means add this book to your collection. Angela Davis is without equals in terms of herwriting. She examines the exploitation of the black womantracing the oppression back toslavery. If you havent already becomefamiliar with the writings ofAngela Davis. She is last greaticon of the black liberationmovement.

From Hard Knocks to Hot Stocks: How I Made a Fortune Through Smart Investing and How You Can Too

Hard Knocks to Hot Stocks
In reading the book I found the first half some what hard to get through. I was looking towards getting the info he was to give on investing. The second half of the book was what I was looking for. If you use his discipline in trading you could make alot of money in the market. I would recommended it just to have a base to use in your stock trading methods.

Morty's stock advice is like Tiger Woods'golf advice...
I know the author personally,he gave me my "shot" on Wall St.when I was 18 years old. There are a lot of "empty suits" that have written books on investing,I promise you Morty is not one of them. If you love facts as I do regarding investments...buy this book it will be of value to you.

This book's a winner- it will make you a winner too!
Larry King's review (on the back cover) said it best, "this is the best book I've ever read on making it big. You're in the hands of a master. Enjoy!"

This book is THE most popular I've ever given as a gift. Everyone likes it, people of all ages. Even cat people like it! Everybody has had a favorite dog and this book reminds them of happy times. The price is right, and this little book is welcome for all occasions. Gerry Morgan

Everyone will love this...
Excellent book!! This is high praise considering I am a cat person. The photographs and the verses are wonderful and fit well together. If you don't at least like this book, you do not have a warm spot in your entire body.

Great gift
I love this book, and have given it to several people as a gift. Everyone has enjoyed it and always has their own stories to tell about their favorite dogs. Now if Priscilla and Bobbie would only write a book about favorite cats....!

Under the Mink
Published in Paperback by Alyson Pubns (01 April, 2001)
Authors: Lisa E. Davis and Lisa E. Davis
Average review score:

Under the pink
This thriller set in 1949's New York City stars a wild assortment of characters (heroes and lowlifes), and is a real page-turner. It centers mostly on Blackie Cole, a butch nightclub singer employed by the mafia, who discovers a dead man in the club. When the dead man's sister shows up, Blackie is torn between her growing desire for the uptown woman and her duty to her mob boss. And Blackie's ex-girlfriend isn't quite through with Blackie either. Through a series of mishaps, Blackie's mob boss thinks she's ratted him out, and targets her for elimination. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and found it rather intoxicating at times. I felt the story as a whole was diluted by the tidal wave of characters populating the novel, some of whom were throwaways lasting a page or so. Some of these details became distracting to me because they seemed unnecessary by the book's end. Nevertheless, I would highly recommend "Under the Mink" not only to lesbians in search of a new romantic thriller, but also to anyone searching for a well-written and involving historical novel. Lisa Davis is certainly a writer worth reading.

better than your average butch
What's a drag kig to do when she finds a dead body in the bathroom? Torn between the mob, the cops, and deliciously different women, Blackie has a lot on her hands in this novel. The settings are impressively depicted, but the characters a bit stock. Overall, this one was worth waiting for, and I'm ready for another offering from this writer.

Thank you Lisa for your research!
So often, lesbian books are filled with adolescent cravings and sexual lust. This is a wonderful book that integrates lesbian sexuality with the reality of a specific time period. I loved the mystery and the history. I trusted the author in her research and I loved her ability to weave a tale. I think it has much to do with the author's research as well as her wonderful ability to write. We need more authors like this. Great talent is found here. Thank you for an interesting and informative read.
